Kursbeschreibung
Course language: English
Target group: This event is aimed at doctoral candidates of all faculties.
Trainer: Birgit Lukowski
Content:
Poster sessions are an integral part of almost every scientific conference. Their purpose is to highlight research results, visualize them, and stimulate discussion. To draw your audience in, you need a crystal-clear structure, a text format optimized for best legibility and well-chosen graphics. And above all, you need to think well through how to organize your research content on the required paper or digital poster format.
Basic rules of graphic design and layout technique will help you to present your work in an understandable and visually convincing way. The training also provides time to put directly into practice what you have learned, as well as to get useful feedback from group and trainer.
Main topics:
- Communication: Main Message, Target Group, Objectives, Intended Impact
- Content Structure – Preparing Text and Images
- Design Basics: Typography, Colour, Visualization, Composition, Proportion, Balance
- Corporate Design and Poster Templates
- Professional Layout Technique – Poster Design with Grid and Columns
You are warmly invited to bring text, graphic and image material of your research or a recently designed poster. If you come well-prepared, you may come away from the workshop with a finalised poster. Make sure that you have PowerPoint (or a comparable applicaton) ready on your computer. A functional microphone and a face time camera are also required to guarantee a productive and effective online-communication.
Registration:
We have decided to make our courses avilable via the booking portal of Kiel University's Continuing Professional Development Center with immediate effect. You will find them listed under the category Exclusively for Doctoral Researchers. Courses within this category are the courses of the Graduate Centers qualification program. They are free of charge for doctoral researchers who are registered with the Graduate Center. To get access to these courses you must register with the Graduate Center, here.
Registrations are welcome until September, 27th, 2026. We will then determine whether the minimum number of 10 participants has been reached. Should the minimum number of participants not have been reached, the event will not take place due to financial reasons. Once the minimum number of participants has been reached, further registrations are possible until 8 days before the event begins.
Organizational details:
- As a general rule, we expect you to participate in our online events with the camera switched on. Please comply with the request of the trainers and/or lecturers if they remind you to do so.
- Please note the data protection statement of the Graduate Center.
- Please find general information at the website of the Graduate Center for registration, waiting list and de-registration.
- Please find general information at the website of the Graduate Center for sanctions.
- In order to book courses through this portal, you will need to create a personal account. Once you have done so, you can use this account to register for the Graduate Center's courses. This offers two main advantages:
- In addition to the Exclusively for Doctoral Researchers category, you will also have access to the full range of courses offered by the Continuing Professional Development Center and you can explore whether they might be of interest to you.
- You will have a consolidated record of all courses you have attended in one place.
